Art Quest: Learning About Art via Quests

Description:  This will be an interactive art exhibition and quest offered in Second Life. Participants will learn about famous artists and pieces of art work via clues and activities. The build will have the participants teleporting to different times in art history and looking for certain items via riddles and hints.  Participants will:

  • demonstrate an increased knowledge of art history
  • be able to identify famous works of art
  • use critical thinking to solve riddles

The Legacy of Literature Alive!

Description: Literature Alive! has been in SL for 10 years.  Having created and built more than 80 literary simulations, LA! was the first Open Educational Resource initiative on the grid.  This interactive presentation will demonstrate the power of learning literature in an immersive environment.   • have a great understanding of the successes and challenges of teaching literature in Second Life.
  • experience immersive literature by engaging in classroom examples.

Description: The robotic arm dusts off the sand from the window.  “Crew … Prepare to exit our time capsule and collect readings on Humans of the past 10 years.  You will return to our craft when you have assembled archaeological data about human’s failures and triumphs in remote learning”. Joins us as we:

  • explore and evaluate virtual worlds used for education over the past 10 years and create a reflective artifact.
  • experience Role-Play, Group Collaboration, Gamification, Agency, and Constructionist learning.

Chemistry Labs in Second Life

Description: Second Life as a potential medium for teaching chemistry labs was tested with Texas A&M University general chemistry students for 4 semesters using NSF funds. Four lab sections did two labs in Second Life, while the remaining students did the labs as normal.  We wish to share Chemistry World with others  – join us for a tour and discussion of best practices for lab courses in virtual worlds. Description: The Lizards of ARS, the Latin word for art, functions as a parody improvisational site for visitors to learn about the changing nature of art, and reinterpret its various meanings that range from beauty, preference, significant form, expression, to kitsch, and game.

  • Teach about the changing nature of art. Like a game in constant play, ART transforms itself.
  • Transform the parody play by mask and prop making, reading, writing, and dramatic interpreting, and photographing.
  • Add to the evolving installation:  Click on the giant Lizard face for a play copy, rewrite a character script, and send a mask/prop to the presenter.

The legacy of Bob Dylan is still being written. But, it is hard to argue that Dylan is not one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. This past year (October 2016) Dylan won the Nobel Prize for “redefining the boundaries of literature.”  We are delighted to present some of the best of Bob Dylan’s work in our opening “Lightning Production’s “Blowin’ In The Wind” Tribute Concert at the VWBPE Social Plaza. Virtual worlds have been “the latest thing” since the birth of the World Wide Web in 1993. In this “long view,” Dr. Celia Pearce, author of The Interactive Book (1997), Communities of Play (2009), and co-author of Ethnography and Virtual Worlds (2012) will talk about the history of virtual worlds, trends in emergent behavior, looking at patterns in individual virtual worlds, as well as larger patterns that traverse worlds. This keynote will include the first formal presentation of her co-authored landmark “trans-world” survey published in 2015, as well as historical materials dating back to the earliest virtual worlds conferences in the 1990s.

Their performance of Phylogeny will examine the reverse development of the species from humans to dragons.  There are a limited amount of free tickets available at the Social Plaza. Or, if you prefer to be above the water, we have kayaking, jet skiing, and hiking up to see Poseidon at the top of Mt. Legacy.  This is your chance to catch-up with old friends, and make new friends while you get ready for day two. Get yourself organized and your questions answered about which sessions and activities you will want to attend. Be amazed as they dance on walking elephants and do many very unique acrobatic animations, reality fire juggling, including, fire hula hoops, high tight wire walk, and a fire dance… all colored by effects of many different kinds. Witness the use of special effects such as fireballs, particles, smoke, and other kinds of realistically living light. The ChangHigh Sisters have discovered and perfected the use of many unique effects which they blend into a pyrotechnic fire work display. You will not want to miss this supreme circus acrobatic fire show with a mixture of highly spiritual music and cosmic speech blended with universal insight, wisdom and philosophy.

  • To introduce the Fieldscapes platform and how existing lessons and environments can be used for immersive education
  • To give an overview of how editing works in the Fieldscapes. Editing is off-line so participants can try out the editing after the session.

Participants will be asked to create a photographic record of their learning.

The Quest will culminate on Day Two with reporting on and evaluating these experiences, collectively modeling the Whole Brain, and presentation of awards for completion at 3:00 PM SLT. Data collected from this event will be the first in a year-long study.

Participants will learn and gain greater appreciation for these cultures which contain much value, hope and timeless wisdom for the modern world. The goals of this presentation are:

  • to provide an educational and immersive learning experience based on indigenous mythology and wisdom
  • to broaden perspective of the common universal themes in mythology and to foster a greater appreciation and respect for  international diversity
  • to develop a set of machinima video based tutorials to enable other educational practitioners to be able to create multimedia learning resources
