VCARA: Participate. Educate. Innovate.

Description: Participants will explore the U-See-Um exhibit and interact with diverse media to answer questions about the evolution of SJSU iSchool’s VCARA as an immersive learning space with content related to virtual worlds, education, information science and archives. Then participants will navigate through the 10-story Archivium, interacting with past VCARA conference presentations including slideshows, video, text, and audio to receive a prize at the top.
Participants will locate exhibit content to identify key aspects of immersive education history.
Participants will encounter and analyze interactive content while navigating an immersive landscape.

Access: This event takes place in Second Life. See the conference website for information about creating a Second Life account. Either SL or Firestorm viewers are recommended. Alternatively, users can watch simulcast via Zoom (hosted by VCARA). Information will be provided.

Description: Storming the Bastille: A Look at the French Revolution will be an interactive walk through timeline, where participants can learn about the French Revolution and get an idea of how they can present important moments in history in virtual worlds.

VR and virtual worlds: One and the same?

Description: Through librarians’ perspectives, this presentation analyzes conflicting definitions of VR and virtual worlds and addresses friction between VR and 3D virtual world developers and users. The presentation contrasts two free, desktop-compatible VR worlds (AltspaceVR and Sansar) and summarizes the state of communities in these worlds vs. 3D virtual worlds like Second Life. Ultimately, it proposes best practices for future educational collaboration and digital citizenship across virtual platforms.

Participants will be aware of the complex relationship between VR and virtual worlds

Under the Sea Adventure

Come explore the beautiful underwater area of the social sim. This is your chance to be a mermaid or merman! There are free outfits available and volunteers will be available to help ease you into your mermaid/merman experience. Enjoy the beautiful plants and animals while you ride the undersea scooter, explore the ocean floor, and find hidden prizes.  Be sure to grab a seahorse and explore with us or just enjoy our mer dances in the Merfolk area. We hope you join us Under the Sea!

Hunt Adventure: Escape the Vikings!

Description: The hunt is an interactive and immersive activity in one part of a virtual museum set up as a Viking village in SL.  Participants engage in an innovative adventure in order to solve different problems dealing with history while using English to cooperate creatively.
Participants will be able to immerse in a mixed hunt and escape the room historical setting.

Access: Second Life. See the conference website for information about creating a Second Life account. Either SL or Firestorm viewers are recommended. Avatars must be at least 60 days old. Contact the owner in advance (Severus Alexander) if you would like to bring new avatar students.
